What is Game Center?

Game Center is an online multiplayer social gaming platform that was created by Apple. It was available on iOS devices at first, but it was later integrated in Mac OS X as well, with the introduction of Mountain Lion (Mac OS X 10.8).

Following devices are currently compatible with the Game Center:what-is-game-center

  • iPhone 3GS and later
  • iPad – all models
  • iPad Mini
  • iPod Touch 2nd generation and later
  • MacBooks and iMacs

For the Game Center to work you need to have at least iOS 4.1 installed on your iOS devices or in case you are using a Mac you’ll need Mac OS X 10.8 or later.

The idea of this gaming platform was to enable gamers across all Apple devices to play the games together, discover new games, and battle with friends and other people for scores and achievements.

You can send friend requests and challenge friends or strangers (click for more info), from basically any country in the world to play a multiplayer game with you. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you will be playing the game at the same time (although there are some games that support real-time multiplayer as well). Instead, you will be able to see how you rank against your friends, or anyone else who plays the same game and try to outdo their score.

Note: The number of friends you can add on a single Game Center account is limited to 500 at the moment.

Certain games have achievements where you receive points if you complete a given task and most games feature a leaderboard where, as we mentioned earlier, players compare their scores with friends and other players.

Note: You can also share your scores on Facebook and Twitter.
