How to use Spotlight as a calculator on Mac

Spotlight is a part of Mac OS X since 2005 (version 10.4). We use it to easily find applications, folders, files etc. But it contains some cool surprises also…

You can access Spotlight by clicking on the magnifying glass on the top right of your screen or by pressing Command + Space.

But, did you know that you can also use spotlight as a calculator?

In case you need to make a few simple calculations, there is no need to open up the Calculator application, since you can get the result instantly by typing a mathematical expression into Spotlight. Once you enter the expression, it will return the answer as a top result.

Note: It is best to use it for calculating arithmetic expressions, using the “+”,”-“,”*” and “/” symbols. However, there are some other functions as well, for example if you enter “sqrt(144)”, Spotlight will return 12 (the square root of 144).
