Let’s talk travel. One of the great benefits of my Macbook Air and iPhone is their portability. Whether for work or play, I love to pick up and go. Luckily, my devices allow me to roam the world and stay connected.
As well as Apple does outfitting its equipment straight out of the box, there are a number of accessories that will help you get the most out of your devices when you hit the road.
World Travel Adapter Kit
Apple devices come with amazing batteries. I’m constantly amazed at how much life I can squeeze out of my Mac before it’s time to start the hunt for an outlet for a recharge, but the reality is that sooner or later you are going to need to top off your batteries. If you have ever traveled internationally, you know this can get a little complicated. Many counties around the world have their own electrical system. The outlet you use in the United Kingdom looks completely different than the one in China. The reason for this is a matter for another day, the question is what to do about it?
Enter the World Travel Adapter Kit from Apple. This kit includes a set of six power adaptors compatible with the electrical systems common around the world. A 30-pin to USB cable will take care of all but the latest iPhones and iPads, and an Apple MagSafe adaptor powers your MacBook. Unfortunately if you have a device with a Lightning connector, you will need to pick up a Lightning to USB cable adaptor.
Solar Panel Charger
Ok, so now you can charge your Apple devices in airports and hotels around the world, but what if there is no outlet available? I love hiking and camping and over the years have found plenty of uses for my trusty iPhone in the wilderness. My phone has allowed me to take quick pictures of wildlife, download and store maps, and once or twice in an emergency, connected me with the outside world.
There are number of solutions to charging up off grid, my favorite is the Goal Zero Nomad 7 v2 Solar Panel. The size and flexibility of this solar panel sets it apart from the crowd. The Nomad 7 includes a 12 volt adaptor letting you plug in any car charger and a USB outlet perfect for your iPhone. About the size of a magazine when folded, the Nomad has convenient loops perfect for hanging it from a backpack, tent, or anything else you an come up with. Taking 4-6 hours for a full charge, the Nomad will keep you going for days with no outlets needed.
Protective Case and Extended Battery
Even with a worldwide power adapter kit, and a solar charger, you still might find yourself looking down at your iPhone to see the dreaded message “10% of battery remaining”. On a long train trip, the last thing you want is to run out of juice. Once installed, there is no reason to take your phone out of this case, both will be charged when plugged into an outlet. LED indicator lights built into the case keep you up to date on the status of your extra battery.
The Alpatronix case is no slouch when it comes to protection. The slim and lightweight design adds less bulk than you might expect, and protects all external surfaces of your phone except the screen. A quality screen protector is included in the package to guard against scratches. As an added bonus the Alpatronix case includes a convenient stand to hold your iPhone up in landscape mode, perfect for watching movies and other video. Available in black, white, or silver and gold, with one black and one red bumper included, bumpers of all colors are available separately letting you customize your phone to fit your style.
Portable Bluetooth Speaker
Bose 25 Noise Canceling Headphones
Bose has built a few great features into these headphones. An inline remote lets you start, stop, and control the volume of your music while your phone stays in your pocket, perfect for cramped airplane seats. When you hit the ground, the built in mic lets you take calls, leaving your hands free for luggage. And when you’re finally ready to put these headphones down, the included carrying case keeps them safe until next time.
With these great accessories, you and your devices are ready to hit the road. So get out there and experience the world, but don’t forget your iPhone!
